HVAC Contractor Supports Green Building
Minick's Inc.: "Striving for Environmental Excellence"

Minnick’s Inc., a third-generation heating and air conditioning company located in Laurel, Maryland, could have chosen as their slogan the usual fare of “Serving Customers since 1954” – the kind of generic phrase that so often finds its way into Yellow Page ads.  Instead, they proudly proclaim “Striving for Environmental Excellence,” which not only differentiates themselves in their market but also within the industry.

In fact, the company takes the green building initiative seriously enough that it has an impact on their whole operation.  “Even in our office, we use copy paper that’s been recycled,” Rob Minnick said.  And that’s only the beginning.

Before they make a replacement sale, for instance, a specially-trained Comfort and Indoor Air Quality Consultant visits the customer’s home and – using advanced diagnostic instruments and testing procedures – identifies problems that affect the indoor living environment.

“The whole house has to be evaluated before we sell them a system,” Minnick said.  “We’re not just selling a box.”  The consultant then provides a personalized plan to solve these problems, permanently.

The energy conservation effort supported by efficient home comfort systems shows real results for customers, but another part of their efforts has a lasting impact even if it isn’t as readily noticed.

“So many people are thinking about the products that go in, but what happens to the products that come out?” Minnick asked.  For his company, the answer comes in recycling and reusing.  As outdated materials are taken from homes or even their own offices, they are collected in bins and later loaded up for a trip to a recycling center or scrap metals dealer.

Minnick recommends that other contractors look for companies that accept recyclable and scrap materials.  “They’re out there, but you have to do a little legwork,” he said.  “Everyone should do their part.  There is so much waste, we can all help out.”
