Contractor Marketer Wins Mustang Convertible in National Contest
Following the Advice of a Sales Letter Master, Adams Hudson Writes One That Wins
Adams Hudson, owner of contractor marketing firm Hudson Ink placed first in a national copywriting contest offering a Mustang convertible as its top award. “I wasn’t even going to enter,” said a reluctant Hudson. “The competition is too great, and of course you always think, ‘They won’t pick me’.”
But others urged Hudson to enter The National Sales Letter Contest sponsored by one of the nation’s leading copywriters, Dan Kennedy, whose company and works are the stuff of sales record and legend. “He is to copywriting what Dale Earnhardt is to NASCAR; revered, well known, and immensely in demand,” said Hudson.
Typical copywriting jobs that Kennedy accepts range from $300,000 to $800,000 for a single project, much of that from repeat customers. The National Sales Letter Contest was open to all 110,000 members of Kennedy’s marketing club, (see www.dankennedy.com). More than 1,000 attended the national convention and eagerly awaited news of who’d win the contest and a new Ford Mustang convertible.
Hudson entered a marketing package that adhered to Kennedy’s philosophy, which had greatly influenced his copyrighting training. Hudson freshened up the material, which he wrote three years ago and had performed extremely well in the marketplace. “Once I entered, I just sort of forgot about it.”
A few weeks later, he learned he was one of 40 finalists, but that was his last contact. “I was speaking in Kansas City while the marketing convention and announcement was being made,” said Hudson, “and figured I didn’t win because they’d have probably called to prep the winner for the stage.” No call came for Hudson.
Until the next week. “I’d put it out of my mind, but then their prize registrar called and said I’d won. I guess I was in denial because I asked her ‘which’ prize I won, and she said, ‘Mr. Hudson, you won THE prize, the top prize, the new car.’ I was floored.”
Sponsors offered Hudson the car, the cash equivalent or hands-on consulting and copywriting from Kennedy. Hudson passed on the car and chose to learn from Kennedy.
Kennedy has a huge reputation as an expert speaker and marketing strategist who has shared the platform with Colin Powell, George H.W. Bush, Zig Ziglar and General Norman Schwarzkopf.
“I already have a car or two; I’d rather have the education, which I feel will last me a lifetime and be more lucrative if I’m not too dumb to learn something. It’ll be an honor to work with a real master of his profession.”
Hudson, Ink (www.hudsonink.com) works with the in-home service contracting trades nationally and has been chosen as the national partner for the largest heating and cooling association (ACCA), plus the largest plumbing association (PHCC) and specialty trade group (QSC), also being featured as a speaker at numerous national contractor conventions. His company was chosen by the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce as Small Business of the Year in 2007.
“To win this, I feel like I’ve been admitted to the most elite private school in the country,” said Hudson. “I can’t wait for the learning to begin – if only to find out how much I don’t know.”
